I can’t believe it was nearly a week ago I went to see the anticipated CHICAGO at Sunderland Empire Theatre.

My first time seeing the show live and also my first visit to Sunderland Empire!

Chicago has been touring for over 20 years! Can you believe it was that long ago! It all kicked off at Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway but for me, I was obsessed by the movie in 2002…and Catherine Zeta Jones Legs! As a teenager I would sit and watch this over and over again the memorise the words to every son whilst pretending I was Roxy or Velma. It depended which mood I was in haha.

The Broadway show has won numerous awards over the years including Grammy award for Best Musical Theatre.

The show is based in the mid 1920’s and focuses on the story of Velma Kelly and Roxy Heart both self admitted murderers of their husbands and fighting to work with the best lawyer in town Billy Flynn, who is sure to get them off! The show itself was based on actual criminals from the 1920’s.

I LOVE the role woman have in this musical especially in “cell block tango”. A song about how woman murder their husband’s but are actually better off despite being told they need to have a man!

I’m gonna try and stay off the whole “feminism” bandwagon but its hard to ignore it given the woman to men ratio in the play.

The production has had an array of different cast members, all fantastic. In my showing we had the gorgeous HAYLEY TAMADDON playing Roxy Heart and then the amazing JOHN PARTRIDGE as Billy Flynn and boy do they have a good set of lungs!

Everything from the dancers to the singing was amazing and perfectly run!

As for Sunderland Empire Theatre, it was like a maze, a marvellous maze. I love the atmosphere at theatre but I particularly love the ones that have managed to keep the original features. The Theatre opened in 1907 and can accommodate over 2,000 people. Following its refurbishment in  its still managed to keep its reputation and is still holding some of the biggest shows around the UK.

Let me know what you’ve seen lately, I need my next fix!
