If you’ve been enjoying the sunny skies and rising temperatures of late, you may be tempted to stay in the UK this summer. Staycations are an increasingly popular choice, and they offer an affordable, convenient alternative to overseas adventures. If you’re embracing the British summer in all its glory this year, but you haven’t chosen a location for your holiday, here are some of the best spots to include on your shortlist.
The British beach break
The UK may not be the first place you think of when the words beach holiday are uttered, but this country boasts some stunning stretches of coastline, and there are some beautiful resorts on offer. Head south to the sleepy villages and picturesque harbours of Devon and Cornwall or venture to the south of Wales to discover gems like Tenby and the Gower Peninsula. The bustling towns of Brighton, Weston-super-Mare, and Blackpool offer the quintessential British seaside break with promenades and piers packed with arcades and amusements. If you long for days filled with candy floss, donkey rides, and crazy golf, these are the destinations for you. For a quieter retreat, make for Dorset’s secluded beaches.

The country escape
If you live in the city, an escape to the country may seem idyllic, especially when the sun is beating down. In the UK, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a location for an adventure in the countryside. The Cotswolds and Malvern Hills are an excellent choice if you fancy embracing a sedate pace of life without being cut off from the world. If you book a hotel in Evesham or you stay in Stratford upon Avon or Cheltenham, you can enjoy leisurely strolls with views to die for without having to drive for miles to find a corner shop. Further north, the Peak District is a perfect base for hiking and cycling, visiting local pubs and soaking up the peace and quiet. You can choose to stay in rural guesthouses in villages like Hayfield or head for slightly larger, busier towns like Buxton.

The city break
Most of us tend to think about Paris, Rome or New York when throwing around ideas for a city break, but the UK boasts a diverse collection of cities, and you don’t have to venture far to enjoy a fun-packed mini break. Head to Bath, York or Chester if you’re interested in history and you adore that olde world feel or visit Manchester, Liverpool or Newcastle if you love the idea of filling your days with shopping, sightseeing or watching sport. By night, you can do everything from catching a gig and enjoying a Michelin-starred feast to dancing until the early hours or watching a film in the great outdoors.
