2018 has been a great year for theatre and Sunderland Empire and now it’s time for Legally Blonde The Musical.
Oh my god you guys….legally Blonde is back again and completely smashed it on the open night! Standing ovations all around and the best end to a musical with a dance along too!
“Being true to yourself never goes out of style”
Everyone knows Legally Blonde…or do they?!? Being honest, I haven’t seen the movie before yet I know the famous character Elle Woods so I assume if you haven’t seen it you will at least know of it. I went along on opening night to see it for the first time, running from today till 21st April 2018!
Legally Blonde: Where it all started
Now we’ve established the movie was a hit back in 2001 then saying the musical is a smash hit is expected. It certainly lived up to it’s expectations!
The musical started in 2007 on Broadway in America and was so good its came across the pond, to London and now on it’s UK tour and arrived here, in he North East.
Back When the show was on Broadway it was nominated for a whole bunch of awards but didn’t win any unfortunately. However when it came across the pond in 2010 with new production it has now won awards including best new musical.
The Cast
There a fair few familiar faces in this 2n UK tour cast all brilliantly qualified to put on a fab show!
Lucie Jones, to me famous for being in the final of X Factor but also represented us at Eurovision too! She has played great roles including another top musical Rent and now plays the lead role as Elle Woods and there couldn’t be a better woman to play the role. She was beyond amazing, her voice is incredible but she has some real humour too! Its fab to see her go from a young girl on TV to the woman she is now and that’s true to the story of Elle Woods too!
Other TV lovers will recognise Rita Simons also known as Roxy from EastEnders. She plays a very different role and OMG what a voice! She brought some real depth the musical as well as a lot of laughs! her role was hilarious and she pulled it off fab! Her and Lucie together made me cry during the whole show!
Now one for the ladies, Bill Ward. A local actor from Newcastle more recently known for his role in Emmerdale but has been on many shows including theatre too! He plays the baddie of the show Professor Callahan and he’s very god at it too! But if he’s not your type then there’s plenty of hot guys to go round, from the sexy Mr postman, to the heartthrob played by Liam Doyle or the shy boy turned hunk David Barrett. David was fab in the role of Emmett and just like Elle it was lovely to see their characters grow as the show went on.
What to expect
Humour, above all else, the characters on take themselves to serious and it’s a show for everyone! it may be about frat girls and a musical but it have hilarious scenes that had everyone laughing out loud in their seats, even the men in the audience!
The whole cast were amazing, I really thought that the voice of Laura Harrison playing Vivienne was exceptional and she deserves a shout out, I really wish I heard her more in the show. And last but not least the super lush little dogs of the show! If your a dog lover your in for a treat!
I’m off the download the soundtrack now, until my net time it comes round and I’ll know all the words!
